SYMPTOMS

The backup type in Settings is set to Increment, Mirror, or Differential type; however, it keeps backing up all the selected files each time instead of only new and changed files.

CAUSE

There are different causes. It could be one of the following:

For All Backup Types
  • You may have created two separate backup jobs: one full and one for the changes. Please make sure this is not the case.
For Mirror Backup
  • When backup with compression is used, but the data exceeds 2 GB in its compressed form.
  • When you change one of the backup settings, like compression or encryption. In this case, a new full backup needs to be created.
  • When you move the backup to a new location (change the backup drive/path). In this case, a new full backup needs to be created.
  • When the backup is aborted at a critical stage of the backup process.
For Incremental without Rollback Backup
  • When backup with compression is used, but the data exceeds 2 GB in its compressed form.
  • When you change one of the backup settings, like compression or encryption. In this case, a new full backup needs to be created.
  • When you move the backup to a new location (change the backup drive/path). In this case, a new full backup needs to be created.
  • When the backup is aborted at a critical stage of the backup process.
For Incremental with Rollback Backup
  • When the backup is spanned over multiple disk volumes/locations, or the last backup is in a different location.
  • When you change one of the backup settings, like compression or encryption. In this case, a new full backup needs to be created.
  • When the backup is aborted at a critical stage of the backup process.
For Differential Backup
  • When the backup is spanned over multiple disk volumes/locations, or the last backup is in a different location.
  • When you change one of the backup settings, like compression or encryption. In this case, a new full backup needs to be created.
  • When the backup is aborted at a critical stage of the backup process.

RESOLUTION

  • If you are using two separate backup jobs to back up the same data to the same location, stop that immediately. Instead, create one backup job and set the backup type as needed (Mirror, Incremental, or Differential). This way, Genie Backup Manager will perform a full backup for the first run and then continue backing up changes.
  • Refrain from changing the backup settings for the existing backup jobs so frequently.
  • In case of backup spanned to multiple locations or the last backup is in a different location, open your Genie Backup Manager (GBM) software → ToolsGlobal Preferences → From Category, select Cataloging → Select the Read index from catalog option. This will enable GBM to read the backup index from the backup catalog instead of the actual backup.
